Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
A wonderful Hosta with thick-textured, large grey-blue leaves growing up to 20cm (8") long. This RHS AGM variety produces elegant racemes of bell-shaped, pale lavender flowers above neat mounds of foliage from mid-summer onwards. Also known as the Plantain Lily, Hosta 'Halcyon' makes a fabulous addition to borders, woodland gardens and patio containers, producing the best colour in a shady position. Ideal as a groundcover plant, use the lush, bold leaves as a contrast to feathery foliage or flowers. Height: 40cm (16"). Spread: 50cm (20"). Supplied in a 9cm pot.

Culinary information: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. Gradually acclimatise Hosta plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days before planting into their final positions. When growing Hostas, choose a position in partial or dappled shade on fertile, moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
