Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Hostas are the 'go to' plant for shady borders or in pots on shaded patios. Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans is a worthy RHS Award of Garden Merit holder due to it's many features. The Giant Blue Hosta has ridged blue/green foliage which forms a backdrop to the pale lilac bell shaped flowers that appear in the summer on stems above the foliage. Hostas will thrive on both dry or damp shaded areas. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 120cm (48").

Culinary information: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
Plant Hostas in sun or dappled shade on well drained soil. Slugs and snails are particularly fond of Hostas so it is worth providing young plants with some protection while they establish.
