A Hosta as sweet as 'So Sweet' is hard to imagine! The foliage of this plantain lily is heart-shaped and each leaf has a wonderful golden yellow margin that gradually turns to white as the season progresses from spring into summer. This hardy perennial looks great when planted in groups in borders and it also goes well in a rock garden and even in containers. Voted Hosta of the Year in America back in 1996, Hosta 'So Sweet' is a medium-sized variety that produces fragrant white flowers in summer. It appreciates a moist, humus-rich soil and some feed between March and June. This is a Hosta that can tolerate full sun and also grows well in partial shade. Height: 35cm; (1'2") Spread: 55cm (1'10").

Culinary information: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. When growing Hostas, choose a position in partial or dappled shade on fertile, moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
