Why not try and grow something you can't buy in the supermarket? Mini Kiwis are exotic and delicious. Challenge yourself to growing your own juicy kiwis with this Kiwi Jumbo Duo. These two varieties are a perfect match to ensure they pollinate and grow the best and most bountiful crop possible in your garden!
Kiwi Jumbo Duo includes:
'Pink Jumbo' is one of the largest fruited of all mini varieties, producing Kiwis weighing around 10g each. Pink on the outside and green on the inside! This novel cultivar bears striking pink fruits, but surprisingly, the flesh is a contrasting bright green. The oval fruits are ready to harvest in September, packed with Vitamin C and delicious eaten straight from the vine.It has a sweet flavour and an earlier ripening time in September than other hardy Kiwis. Height and spread: 3-4m (10-13ft).
The perfect match for ‘Pink Jumbo’, ‘Prince Jumbo’ is a non-fruiting vigorous male clone that serves as an indispensable pollinator for all Actinidia arguta varieties. Creamy-white flowers are produced prolifically and reliably in June on a fast-growing vine which can easily be kept compact with pruning. Height and spread: up to 8 metres (26ft).
Kiwi arguta, also known as the Baby Kiwi or Hardy Kiwi, is ideal for growing in the UK. Fully hardy, they survive temperatures down to -15 to -10C. Hardy Kiwi produce masses of small, smooth, gooseberry-sized fruit that are sweeter than other Kiwis and don’t need to be peeled as they lack the hair-like covering of other Kiwi fruits. Established vines can produce up to 13kg of fruit. They form fast-growing, twining climbers with simple ovate leaves and fragrant, creamy-white flowers in summer and make attractive features for a trellis, pergola or wall in a sunny, south-facing position.
2 x 9cm Peat-Free Potted Plants (1 of each variety) (KF5643)
Feed and water regularly until fully established, particularly during hot dry periods. Train the stems onto their supports. In autumn apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
Prune kiwi fruit plants in winter. In the first two years, prune plants to create an espalier framework of one permanent leading stem and two horizontal stems. Cut back the leading shoot to maintain it within the allotted space. Fruit is formed on the previous year's wood, and also on fruit spurs created by cutting back side shoots on horizontal stems to 3 or 4 buds. Overcrowded side shoots can be thinned out to allow light and air around the developing fruit. Plants may take 3 years before producing a full crop of delicious kiwi fruit.
