Lilac 'President Lincoln' is simple and elegant, with pale purple blooms and a deliciously sweet fragrance. This well branched, deciduous shrub is relatively compact compared to some of its sprawling cousins, and makes a fine choice for the back of a sunny border. The nectar-rich blooms are always busy with the hum of pollinating insects. They make charming cut flowers if you can spare a few stems. A traditional cottage garden shrub that will demand very little maintenance once established. Height: 3m (10’). Spread: 2m (6’,6").

When growing lilac in patio containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the lilac tree at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in full sun. Alternatively, plant lilac standards directly into borders in moist, free draining, neutral to alkaline soil.

Feed and water regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. Dwarf lilacs need little pruning other than the removal of faded flowers and occasional removal of only the oldest stems, as the plant ages.
