Feed and water regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. Dwarf lilacs need little pruning other than the removal of faded flowers and occasional removal of only the oldest stems, as the plant ages.
When growing lilac in patio containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the lilac tree at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in full sun. Alternatively, plant lilac directly into borders in moist, free draining, neutral to alkaline soil.
