Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’ is one of the darkest varieties you’ll find. Deep purple, goblet shaped blooms emerge from fuzzy buds to decorate the bare branches in spring, followed weeks later by a cloak of bright green foliage. This magnificent deciduous shrub makes an outstanding specimen for borders and woodland gardens where it will flower from a relatively young age. Height: 3m (9’). Spread: 1.5m (5’). Supplied as a bareroot plant.

Culinary information: Some parts of these flowers are edible. However, some people have had strong allergic reactions to tulip flowers. If touching them causes a rash, numbness etc. then tulip flowers should not be eaten. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Magnolia plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems.
Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a moist, well drained acid to neutral soil that is high in organic matter. If you don’t have acid soil, incorporate plenty of ericaceous compost into your border prior to planting. Plant bareroot Magnolias at the same depth as they were previously planted. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
