Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Magnolia plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems.
Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a moist, well drained acid to neutral soil that is high in organic matter. If you don't have acid soil, incorporate plenty of ericaceous compost into your border prior to planting. Plant bareroot Magnolias at the same depth as they were previously planted. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. If your magnolia arrives with shoots coming out below the grafts, then prune off shoots below the graft to enable the magnolia to flourish.

What A Stunner! 2013-08-05

My little Magnolia Sunrise stem arrived bare-rooted and with four fat buds. I planted it in sub zero temperatures, wrapped it up in fleece and didn't hold out much hope as the weather was so appalling. Then, the sun came out, the wrapper came off and within a week all the buds had popped into the most spectacular flowers. Short lived yes, like all magnolia, but wow what a show stopper. Foliage is just appearing now and I just can't wait to see it grow and get more and more spectacular in years to come. Many thanks again VM.
