Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

An award-winning variety of Crab Apple that stands out for its exceptional combination of vivid foliage, flowers, fruit. Arguably the best of the few purple-leaved crab apples available, Malus toringo ‘Scarlett’ will never disappoint!

April sees a prolific display of deep red fragrant flowers beautifully complemented by shiny lobed foliage that emerges rich purple. The wine-red foliage provides a welcome contrast in the garden landscape amongst the fresh greens of spring. The leaves mature to green during the summer before turning fiery shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn. Dusky, dark burgundy fruits that persist through winter deliver the finale to this all-season performance. Forming a small, spreading tree with arching branches Malus toringo, ‘Scarlett’ copes with all soil types and tolerates heavy clay much better than flowering cherries. It has been honoured with an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Crab apples are one of the best small trees for bringing a long season of interest to smaller gardens. Featuring spring blossom, autumn foliage colour and fruit they provide many months of colour plus food for insects and birds. The fruit can also be used to make crab apple jelly. These adaptable trees are suited to all soil types. They make excellent pollination-partners for fruiting apple trees. Trees are self-fertile but fruit production is best with another crab apple cultivar. Height: 2.5m (8ft). Spread: 3m (10ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

1 x 12 Litre Potted Plant (KF3256)

Plant crab apple trees in a sheltered, sunny position in any fertile, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well.
Fruit trees do not suffer weed competition well. Keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the tree, taking care not to mound it up against the stem. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Feed and water crab apple trees during particularly dry periods. Crab apples require only minimal pruning in late winter or spring, to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth. Crab apple fruits can be harvested from autumn onwards to make delicious crab apple jelly.
