The Evening Primrose, Oenothera fruticosa 'African Sun' is a great hardy perennial which, contrary to what you might expect, displays its yellow/gold flowers during daytime as well as evening. Otherwise known as Sundrops, the cheerful bowl-shaped blooms look wonderful in pots and containers; in mixed borders; in rockeries; wildlife gardens and alpine gardens. Oenothera is a useful herbaceous perennial with slender green foliage and it thrives in many different settings. It requires very little attention and although it likes full sun, this plant will tolerate a little shade. You will be rewarded with delightful yellow flowers from May through to September. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Evening Primrose plants dislike wet soils in winter. Plant them in a well drained site, on free draining or even poor stony soil, in full sun.
Feed and water Oenothera plants regularly until they are fully established. Once established, border grown plants will only require watering in the hottest of summers. Hanging baskets and containers will still need watering regularly. Cut back faded Evening Primrose flower stems and apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in spring.
