Oxalis melanosticta 'Ken Aslet' is a cheery little alpine plant with attractive silvery-green, clover-like foliage which is softly hairy. The tubular, golden flowers that emerge in late summer bring a splash of colour to the garden as other plants are fading. This low, matt-forming, hardy perennial is ideal for meandering through rockeries grown in alpine troughs where they can spill over the sides. Height: 10cm (4”). Spread: 45cm (18”).

Outdoors, grow oxalis plants in containers or in sheltered rockeries and borders. In cold, wet areas it is best grown as a houseplant on a bright windowsill or in a conservatory or greenhouse. Plant Oxalis corms at a depth of 3cm (1”) in well drained, rich fertile soil, or for indoor cultivation, in a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2. Position in full sun or light shade.

After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it. Oxalis bulbs require a short period of dormancy at this stage, during which time the compost should be allowed to dry out a little so that it is kept just moist. Resume feeding and watering when oxalis plants start into growth again.
