Native to China, this unusual deciduous tree is sure to be a talking point in your garden! Beautiful fragrant, lilac-mauve flowers, which resemble foxgloves, are borne in late spring just before the tree bursts into leaf. The large bright green, slightly hairy leaves are produced on stout upright stems making the foxglove tree a fantastic architectural feature in the garden. This fast-growing tree can be cut back hard annually to produce a tall shrub adorned with lush, tropical-looking leaves to 30cm in diameter! Winner of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, grow Paulownia tomentosa as a specimen tree or at the back of a mixed shrub border. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 6m (20'). Supplied in a 3 litre pot.

Gradually acclimatise Paulownia tomentosa trees to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant the empress tree in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil; it will grow happily in improved clay soils. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in full sun with shelter from cold winds. Although perfectly hardy once mature, Princess trees will appreciate a layer of fleece for winter protection when young.
Feed and water Paulownia trees regularly until fully established. Once established, Paulownia tomentosa requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in late winter or early spring. To grow Paulownia as a shrub cut back all stems to a low permanent framework in early spring each year. This will encourage vigorous young shoots with large leaves. Exposed flower buds may be damaged by hard frosts.
