Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Being the king of the volcano world, 'Vesuvius' is a fitting name for this Penstemon, which is among the finest in the Volcano series. Perhaps best known for its non-stop flowering throughout the summer and early autumn, this hardy perennial’s compact, upright habit makes it well suited to the front of sunny or partially shady borders, or to patio containers. The blooms themselves are a pretty purple-blue colour with a pure white throat and prove attractive to pollinating insects. Although Penstemon 'Vesuvius' probably couldn't grow inside a volcano, it can survive almost anything else: drought, rain, slugs and snails are no match for this resilient plant. Height: 60cm (2'0"); Spread: 30cm (1'0").

Penstemon plants dislike cold, wet soils in winter. Plant them in a well drained site, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend heavy clay soils. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade.
Feed and water Penstemon plants regularly until they are fully established. Cut back faded Penstemon flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in autumn or spring. Avoid pruning back old foliage until spring arrives, as this will help to protect the plant during winter.
