A beautiful specimen conifer for small gardens. Pinus densiflora 'Umbraculifera' is an old Japanese form, introduced in 1890, that captures the elegance of traditional Japanese garden style. It forms fan-shaped, multi-stemmed tree with a flattened, umbrella-shaped crown. The thick canopy of soft, mid-green needles sometimes turns yellow in winter. Masses of small, oval cones are carried even on young trees. As the tree matures, the older branches become bare, emphasising its irregular but graceful fan-shape whilst revealing attractive, orange-brown flaking bark. Pinus densiflora 'Umbraculifera' is a very hardy, wind-tolerant pine that adapts to a wide range of soils, providing they are well drained. Height and spread: 2-4m (6.5ft-13ft).

Grow Pines in any well-drained soil in full sun. Most Pines will tolerate dry conditions and exposed locations once established.

Once established, Pines require no pruning or maintenance.
