This might be an F2 Hybrid, but the effect and performance is stunning! Extra large, double flowers in a wide range of colours, on naturally spreading plants. They also make excellent windowsill pot plants. Height: 10-15cm (4-6in).

Sow seeds in late February or March on the surface of a good seed compost. Germination takes 10-21 days at 18-21C (65-70F). Don't exclude light, sealing in a polythene bag after sowing is helpful.

When large enough to handle transplant the seedlings to boxes or 7.5cm (3in) pots, and grow on the dry side in cooler conditions. When well grown, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out in late spring after all risk of frost has passed 30cm (12in) apart in full sun and well drained soil. Usually take 12 weeks from sowing to flowering.

CAUTION: Portulaca seeds are dust-like. To open packet, hold over a sheet of white paper, cut along three sides of the inner pack and carefully open out flat. Tap the packet gently to dislodge the seed.
