Also known as Red Hot Poker, this easy, reliable perennial is an old favourite for herbaceous borders. Upright stems tower over strap like evergreen foliage, and carry impressive torch-like flower heads formed from a blaze of tiny flowers. The fiery blooms are also highly attractive to bees. Kniphofia 'Flamenco Mixed' makes a tough and reliable choice for perennial borders, thriving with very little attention. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 40cm (16").

Pot up kniphofia plug plants into 9cm pots and grow them on in frost free conditions. When plugs are fully rooted into their pots, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days and transplant into borders or patio containers. Torch lilies prefer a sunny or semi shaded position in fertile, moist, well drained soil. Work some well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil prior to planting.

Water regularly until established. Cut back faded Kniphofia flower heads in autumn and apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant. Lift and divide clumps of Red Hot Pokers in spring every third year to maintain their vigour.
