Rhubarb ‘Taster’s Collection’ will keep you supplied with rhubarb crumble, pies, and jams throughout the rhubarb season, from the earliest fruiting varieties to the last. This easy to grow vegetable is roundly popular – just ensure you have well-manured soil and plenty of custard! Rhubarb ‘Taster’s Collection’ comprises 3 crowns, 1 of each of the following varieties:

  • Rhubarb 'Timperley Early' - regarded as the earliest maturing variety, Rhubarb 'Timperley Early' is ideal for forcing to provide tender pink sticks as early as February, but it can also be grown unforced in the normal way. This RHS AGM variety produces a moderate yield of pink stems streaked with apple green. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 120cm (48").
  • Rhubarb ‘Polish Raspberry’ - thick, deep red stalks with a superb, sweet flavour from this vigorous rhubarb. The high quality, tender stems of Rhubarb 'Polish Raspberry' can be harvested early in the season, without the need for forcing. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 120cm (48").
  • Rhubarb 'Victoria' - tender flesh with an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity. Once established, this popular, traditional variety will produce a heavy crop, year after year. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 120cm (48").

These budded pieces, taken from established crowns will quickly mature, resulting in crowns big enough to harvest from 2 years after planting.

3 Crowns (1 Of Each Variety) (KC4676)

Plant rhubarb from autumn to spring in a sunny position in well drained soil. Prepare the soil in advance by digging in plenty of well rotted manure and clearing all weeds. When planting rhubarb crowns, set them so that the top of the crown sits 3cm (1") below soil level and allow a spacing of 75cm (30") between plants.
During the first year, resist the temptation to harvest the stems, in order to allow the plant to become properly established. In spring, remove the emerging flower heads as they appear. From the second year, stems can be harvested from April to June, when the leaves have fully unfurled. Pull from the base of each stem and twist them away from the crown. Harvest only a few stems at a time. Water rhubarb plants in summer during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. When the leaves die back in autumn, remove the old stalks and apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown. Caution: The leaves of rhubarb plants are toxic if eaten.
