Caution: Harmful if eaten. Plant Robinia in sheltered borders in full sun, in any well drained garden soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively grow Robinia standards in large patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Feed and water container grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. Prune stems in late summer, removing any damaged stems and shaping the head of the standard to a spherical shape. Remove any suckering shoots that appear at the base of the plant to maintain a clear stem. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants.
