Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
With its origins in the Himalayas, this exotic-looking perennial plant bears orchid-like blooms in a vibrant shade of purple. Also known as Hardy Ginger, Roscoea purpurea bursts into life in late spring to reveal strap-shaped leaves on sturdy, fleshy stems. The elegant flowers are produced in succession from mid-July onwards. Perfectly hardy and great for tricky shady spots, grow Roscoea in partially shaded borders, woodland gardens or rock gardens for something a bit different in your late summer garden! Height: 40cm (16"). Spread: 15cm (6"). Supplied as tubers.

Choose a position in partial or dappled shade and plant Roscoea tubers in a neutral to acid, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. They will grow happily in improved clay soils. Dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water in well.
Water Roscoea purpurea regularly during dry periods. Once established hardy ginger requires little attention. In the autumn, apply a deep mulch of compost or bark chips to protect tubers from the harshest winter weather. The mulch can be removed in mid-spring. Growth may be slow to re-emerge, particularly after extreme winters.
