Salvia plants should be a staple ingredient in your summer pots and bedding - the vibrant flower plumes have been a summer mainstay for generations. If traditional varieties are a bit brash for your tastes, Salvia 'White Surprise' offers something a little different - a little more refined. The red florets house delightful creamy-white inners, and the effect isn't as in your face as the big, bright red ones! Bring a touch of class to your summer flower displays with this easy to grow annual and carry the torch for the next generation. Height: 40cm (16in). Spread: 20cm (12in).

Sow Salvia from February to April, in pots or trays on the surface of a moist seed compost and cover seeds with a sprinkling of finely sieved compost. Place in a propagator at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination, which usually takes 7-21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise scarlet sage plants to outdoor conditions over 7 – 10 days before planting outdoors. Plant salvia at a distance of 30cm (12") apart on any light, sandy, well drained soil in full sun.

Once established salvia plants require little attention and cope well with dry conditions. Deadhead faded salvia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Although perennial, Salvia coccinea is half hardy and best grown as an annual in the UK, but may be overwintered in a bright, frost free position if required
