Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Thundercloud' is the perfect deciduous shrub for gardeners looking for a plant that can stand out amongst other shrubs in garden borders. An ornamental Elder, it has the familiar clusters of scented flowers. The tiny pink flowers contrast greatly with the unusual, almost black foliage. Small shiny black berries follow, later in the year, and are a popular food source for garden birds. The RHS have awarded this plant its Award of Garden Merit, due to its visual appeal and low maintenance. It can grow in most conditions, but a bright sunny position will produce the darkest leaf colour. Height: 3m (10’). Spread: 2.5m (8’).

Sambucus plants thrive on any moist but well drained soil, even coping in shallow, chalky conditions. Choose a position in sun or dappled shade.

Feed and water Elder plants until well established. Sambucus requires little maintenance but may be pruned in spring to restrict its size to the space available. If necessary, Elder plants will respond well to hard pruning, which promotes plenty of fresh growth.
