Seemingly innocent, the leaves of the pitcher plant have evolved into water-filled funnels that hide a sinister purpose. These intriguing carnivorous plants devour insects to improve their diet and counter poor nitrogen levels in the soils of their natural habitats. Lured by the promise of sweet nectar-like secretions on the lip of each pitcher, their victims are met by a slippery footing and tumble to a watery death deep within each funnel. Endlessly fascinating, Sarracenia species 'New Hybrids Mixed' make a captivating talking point for the greenhouse, conservatory or a windowsill indoors. Plants will be mature enough to catch insects after 2 - 3 years. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 20cm (8").

1 Packet (15 Seeds) (48357)

Pitcher plants require an acidic compost with virtually no nutrients. Sow seeds from December to March on the surface of pots filled with with moist sphagnum moss peat compost or salt free coir. Add some perlite or grit into the compost mix to ensure good aeration for the plants to grow in Do not cover the seeds or exclude light as this helps germination. Stand the pots in a tray of distilled water or rainwater. Avoid using tap water as this contains chlorine and other minerals which may damage the sensitive roots of Sarracenia plants. Place the tray into a cold frame, cold glasshouse or sheltered spot outside until germination begins in early summer. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3") pots then pot on as required into 13cm (5") and finally 20cm (8") pots, always using the same moisture retentive compost mix.

Grow Sarracenia plants in a sunny position. During the summer months plants are best stood outside on the patio. After 2-3 years they will be big enough to catch insects! Carnivorous plants ‘catch’ their own food and therefore should never be given extra plant food.

Pitcher plants require a reliably moist soil. This is best achieved by regularly standing the pots in a tray of rainwater or distilled water. Avoid using tap water as this contains chlorine and other minerals which may damage the sensitive roots of Sarracenia plants. Allow pots to drain after watering as excessively wet soil may cause the plants to rot, particularly during cold weather.

During the colder months carnivorous plants should be brought into a frost free greenhouse, conservatory or cool, bright windowsill indoors where they will become dormant for the winter. Reduce watering during dormancy to maintain a moist but not waterlogged soil. During dormancy some pitchers may turn brown. These can be trimmed away in the spring when active growth resumes.
