Highly valued for its attractive winter catkins reaching up to 20cm (8") in length, this slow-growing evergreen shrub is a superb addition to the garden, providing all-year-round structure and winter interest. Red-purple shoots make a striking contrast to the glossy green leaves and as mid-winter approaches, masses of long, pendent catkins are elegantly displayed at the tips of the branches. Tolerant of dry shade and coastal conditions, grow Silk Tassel Bush in borders, as a stand-alone specimen, or trained as a wall shrub. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 2m (6.5'). Supplied in a 3 litre pot.

Gradually acclimatise Garrya plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant Silk Tassel Bush in fertile, well-drained soil, incorporating plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in sun or semi-shade with shelter from cold winds. Garrya x issaquahensis will appreciate a layer of fleece for winter protection when young.
Feed and water Garrya shrubs regularly until fully established. Once established, Silk Tassel Bush requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in mid-spring after flowering.
