Also known as the 'Melon Pear' or 'Pepino Dulce', this unusual South American fruit has deliciously juicy flesh with a sweet flavour similar to a cantaloupe melon. The rounded fruits have a creamy skin with distinctive purple markings - fabulous for something a little bit different in the kitchen garden! Solanum muricatum are shrubby, evergreen plants; ideal for growing in containers in the greenhouse or conservatory, where they can be given the warmth they need for successful flowering and fruiting. Height and spread: 90cm (36"). Supplied in a 9cm pot.

Feed and water Solanum muricatum plants frequently. Melon pears are self fertile and pollinated by insects, so keep windows or doors open during the day to allow insects to access the flowers. Harvest melon pear fruits just before they are fully ripe. Fruits will store for several weeks at room temperature.
Re-pot melon pear plants into a slightly larger container and grow them on in frost-free conditions. Solanum muricatum is best grown in a frost-free greenhouse or warm conservatory for optimum flowering and fruiting. If growing pepino outdoors, choose a sheltered sunny position in fertile, well-drained soil. After all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise pepino plants to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting out in their final position in borders and patio containers.
