Flowering Months
Feed sparaxis plants monthly and water well during active growth. After flowering, reduce watering and allow the soil to dry out in order to provide the bulbs with a dry, dormant period. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering before removing it. This will help to feed the bulb and ensure another good display next spring. Harlequin flowers that are grown outdoors should be covered with a dry mulch such as bark chips, to help protect them from cold and wet winter weather. Move patio containers to a frost free position over winter.
Grow sparaxis bulbs in raised beds, containers or sheltered borders in a well-drained soil in full sun. Plant the corms in spring at a depth of 10cm (4"). In frost prone areas, they are best grown in a greenhouse or conservatory, or planted in containers which can be moved to a frost-free position over winter. Use a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2 with added grit to improve drainage.
