Closely related to Senecio, with its ‘String of Pearls’ and ‘String of Dolphins’, String of Rubies or Othonna capensis is a charming trailing succulent whose fleshy leaves uniquely turn ruby red when grown in full sun. The pointed, bean-shaped leaves are strung along striking pinkish purple stems, which tumble gently over the sides of the pot. Hailing from South Africa, this easy-to-grow succulent thrives in a sunny spot and produces yellow flowers for most of the year if it is happy. Height: 10cm (4in). Spread: 30cm (12in).

Grow String of Rubies on a sunny, south-facing windowsill that receives at least 6 hours of sun per day. In less sunny locations, leaves will remain green and the plant may become leggy. Avoid humid environments such as the bathroom, and let the compost dry out fully between waterings.
