Sweet potatoes are highly versatile and increasing in popularity. Traditionally grown in warmer climates, Sweet Potato 'Carolina Ruby' has been bred for the cooler UK climate and produces flavoursome orange-fleshed tubers with ruby red skins. Easy to grow from our special deep-rooted plug plants, plant sweet potatoes straight into your garden or try them in patio bags! They reliably produce a generous crop of tubers from mid-September, which are delicious for wedges, baking or mash. Spread: 3m (10'). Supplied as plug plants.

Harvest Months

Water sweet potato plants regularly and feed container-grown sweet potatoes every other week with a balanced liquid fertiliser. During the growing season, weed between rows and keep plants well watered during hot periods. Sweet potatoes have a trailing habit. Spread the stems out around the plant and prune the growing tips to encourage more lateral shoots to develop. Harvest sweet potatoes from September to October, when the foliage begins to turn yellow and die back.

Culinary note: Sweet potatoes are similar to potatoes – they can be boiled, steamed, baked, fried, mashed or batter fried as 'tempura'. The leaves and tips of young shoots can be cooked as a spinach substitute.

Acclimatise sweet potato plug plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Sweet potatoes require high temperatures of 24-26°C (74-78°F). When growing sweet potatoes outside, plant them through black plastic to provide extra warmth. In particularly cold areas grow sweet potatoes in a greenhouse, polytunnel or under cloches in the vegetable plot. Prior to planting incorporate well rotted manure or compost into the soil to improve its fertility and structure. Plant sweet potatoes 30cm (12") apart, leaving 75cm (30") between rows. Grow them in rich fertile, well drained soil that is preferably light and sandy, with an acid or neutral pH. Choose a position in full sun and water thoroughly after planting.
