Pot up Sweetcorn plants and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions. When all risk of frost is passed and the soil is warm, harden off and plant out in their final positions. Grow sweetcorn plants in a sheltered position in full sun, on fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil that has been deeply dug. Prepare the soil in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Sweetcorn is wind pollinated and should grown in large blocks to assist pollination. Plant sweetcorn at a distance of 35cm (14") apart, leaving 60cm (24") between each row, to form a large block. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.

Feed and water sweetcorn regularly, particularly once the flowers have developed. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. When the silky tassels at the end of each kernel turn brown, peel back the cobs and insert a thumbnail into a kernel. The cobs can be harvested when the juice is a milky colour.
