This reliable plant is perfect for injecting a splash of late summer colour to the garden. Tagetes lucida blooms towards the end of the season, introducing a burst of fresh colour just as other plants may be starting to slow down. The dainty clusters of beautiful golden flowers above a neat bushy of glossy green foliage carry the season of intrerest well into autumn. Height: 75cm (29”). Spread: 45cm (18”).

1 packet (200 seeds) (26002)

Sow Tagetes seed from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Lightly cover the seed with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 21-24C (69-75F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged and not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 5-14 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. Pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage branching and form a bushier plant which will produce more flowers later on. When Tagetes plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in any well drained soil in full sun, at a distance of 30cm (12”) apart.

Feed and water Tagetes plants regularly, particularly during hot, dry periods. Regular deadheading of flowers will encourage further blooms to be produced throughout the summer. Harvest the foliage from June to October. Dry the leaves and use them as a substitute for Tarragon in soups and sauces.
