The Tree Peony flower is a much loved symbol in Chinese culture and today gardeners around the world enjoy their exotic beauty. They flower in spring and have humongous flowers, up to 25cm (10") in diameter. Tree Peonies are hardy shrubs that are disease resistant and in excess of a hundred blooms can flower on a mature plant. The flowers of Tree Peony 'Wu Long Peng Sheng' have deep pink, frilly petals with a yellow centre, Height and spread: 150cm (60").

Culinary information: The petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy and the blooms can be floated in punches. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow tree peonies in sun or semi shade, in well drained soil. Choose a position that is sheltered from cold winds and shaded from strong early morning sunlight. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits at least 10cm (4") below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.
Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established. Remove faded flowers and cut back old foliage in autumn. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
