Traditional, reliable and straight-forward wallflowers are still one of the country’s most sought after hardy biennial plants for early summer flowering. These tough plants have been in our gardens for years and are just as popular now as they have ever been. Wallflower 'Dwarf Scented Mixed' will not only fill your borders, or containers, with a riot of bright and cheerful colours, they also carry a lovely scent to add to your enjoyment of them. Height: 40cm (16"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Culinary information: The tender young shoots can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Bare Roots

This is the traditional format for wallflower planting, tried and tested by generations of gardeners. Planted this way you will have earlier results in spring and many more flowers compared to pot grown plants. Your plants have recently been dug up from the ground and may look slightly wilted and sad on arrival. You may also notice a cabbage smell – this is nothing to worry about - despite their pretty flowers, wallflowers are actually from the same family as cabbages and other brassicas!

For best establishment soak the roots in water for an hour or so before planting. These strong field-grown plants will perk up quickly within one or two weeks once planted into your borders or patio pots.

Grow Wallflowers outdoors in any free draining soil in full sun. Erysimum plants are tolerant of most neutral or alkaline soils and will even cope well on very poor soils.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

Feed and water plants until they are fully established. Trim back wallflowers after flowering to prevent them from becoming leggy.
