Easy-to-grow in the garden or in very moist planters, this luxurious salad crop is tasty with its peppery flavour, making a healthy addition to salads, dips, soups and sandwiches. Height and spread: 20cm (8").

  • Sow outdoors April/May, in a prepared seed bed, raked to a fine tilth before sowing.
  • Sow thinly in shallow drills at the bottom of a 10cm (4in) trench. Space rows by 15cm (6in) apart. Water regularly, keeping moist at all times.
  • When large enough to handle, thin out to 15cm (6in) apart.
  • Keep plants weed-free and water copiously through the season.
  • Harvest as required from July, but don’t cut the plants too low.
  • Can also be grown in pots, use 4 plants per 30cm (12in) container. Stand in a saucer with a 5cm (2in) depth of water that is constantly topped up.
  • Watercress is rich in zinc, iron, calcium, pro-vitamin A and vitamins B1 and B6.
