Plant your oriental lily bulbs as soon as possible after delivery. Choose a site in full sun (ideally with roots shaded), with a free-draining, fertile soil containing lots of organic matter. Plant bulbs 15cm (6in) deep, with the pointed end upwards, and 30cm (12in) apart. After planting, apply a 5cm (2in) deep layer of compost or leaf mould. For containers, plant one bulb to a 15cm (6in) pot or three to a 25cm (10in) pot. Quarter fill with compost, lay the bulbs in with point upwards and just cover with compost, gradually adding more as the plant grows.
Keep moist during blooming and feed regularly with a liquid feed. Deadhead faded blooms. After flowering, reduce watering and leave the stems intact until the foliage turns yellow. Move containers of lilies to a cool, frost-free position over winter. Lily bulbs grown in borders can be lifted, cleaned and stored for the winter, though in mild areas most lilies should survive outdoors provided that the soil is not too wet. A mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost should be applied in spring. a slow-release fertiliser each spring. Divide and repot containerised lilies into fresh compost every other year to increase your stock and enhance flowering.
Caution: All parts of lily plants are toxic to cats.
