Flowering between autumn and spring, the flowers of Clematis napaulensis, Clematis urophylla 'Winter Beauty' and Clematis 'Advent Bells' are more extravagant than other clematis plants and will bring both colour and fragrance to the bare patches in your winter garden. Train these clematis plants against obelisks, walls, fences or in patio containers and get interest all year round.

Collection includes;

  • Clematis napaulensis - Large clusters of scented, white, bell-shaped flowers with rich purple filaments appear from November, filling your garden with colour and a sweet fragrance throughout the winter months. Clematis napaulensis is hardy when grown in a sheltered position and needs very little maintenance. Grow it through a deciduous shrub or alongside another climber to cover its bare stems in summer. Height: 3m (118") or more, depending on growing conditions and maturity. Spread: 1.5m (59"). Pruning group: 1.
  • Clematis 'Advent Bells' - A unique cross between C. cirrhosa ‘Freckles’ x C. napaulensis, this new hybrid is reliably evergreen, with lemon-scented, fragrant blooms from November through to January. The nodding, cup-shaped flowers of Clematis ‘Advent Bells’ are creamy-white outside, with showy, red-speckled markings inside, and a prominent cluster of stamens. Plant this vigorous grower close to your home where the winter flowers can be best appreciated. Height: 5m (15’). Spread: 3m (10’). Pruning group: 1.
  • Clematis urophylla 'Winter Beauty' - This superb evergreen clematis bears its delicate, waxy, bell-shaped flowers in the depths of winter. The foliage is so lush, that you'll think its summertime all year round! Plant Clematis 'Winter Beauty' against a warm house wall so that you can appreciate its winter flowers from your window. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 1.2m (4'). Pruning group: 1.

Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in late summer on the current year’s growth. Pruning should be undertaken in spring before active growth begins. When pruning group 3 Clematis, cut back all of the previous year’s stems to a pair of healthy buds at around 20cm (8") above ground level. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
