Description How to Grow More Info Delivery Reviews
A romantic climbing plant, Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' produces very long, pendant racemes of lilac-purple, deliciously fragrant flowers from mid-spring through to early summer. A dense covering of feathery, divided leaves provide interest throughout summer, turning buttery yellow before falling in autumn. This variety of Chinese Wisteria is more reliable than the straight species, producing fuller flowers from an early age. A wonderful addition to walls, pergolas or even trained up large trees, Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' has been awarded an RHS AGM for its outstanding garden performance. Height: 9m (28’). Spread: 5m (16'). Supplied in 1.5 litre pots.

Culinary information: The flowers are the only edible part of the plant and can be made into an aromatic wine. Their flavour is perfumed. Caution: All other parts of wisteria are poisonous. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Caution: Harmful if eaten. Grow wisteria plants, in a sunny or semi shaded site in any moist, well drained soil. Wisteria flower buds can be damaged by hard spring frosts so choose a sheltered position. Prior to planting add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil. Alternatively grow wisteria plants in large containers of soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate framework to support its trained branches. Standard Wisteria will require particularly sturdy support when grown as a small weeping tree to prevent its head being damaged by strong winds.
Feed and water regularly until fully established. In autumn or spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Prune wisteria in July and again in February. During the first two years, prune wisteria to create a framework of permanent stems. Tie in selected lateral shoots to sturdy supports and cut back unwanted growth. Once the desired framework has been created, continue pruning wisteria twice a year to contain the plants growth within its allotted space.
