Ground cover plants are perfect for a variety of garden areas, from covering steep banks to livening up bare patches of soil beneath trees and shrubs. They help suppress weed growth and are generally low maintenance plants. Ground covering plants are ideal when time is limited in the garden.

Delicate, papery Rock rose flowers will bring a bright splash of colour to your garden from May to July. Clematis 'Freckles'

Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles', Old Man's Beard

This eye-catching evergreen clematis gives a much needed injection of colour to the winter garden, when not many other plants are in flower. This is the earliest of the spring flowering clematis, with cup-shaped pink blooms freckled with maroon-red markings, hence the name freckles. The delicate blooms are followed by attractive fluffy seedheads that sit above glossy evergreen leaves. Clematis 'Freckles' only needs minimal pruning and makes an excellent specimen for containers and borders. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 1.5m (5'). Pruning group: 1. Supplied in 9cm pot.

Ground Cover Collection

A delightful collection of evergreen low-growing, vigorous ground cover plants that will give your garden year-round interest.   • Aurinia saxatilis compactum 'Gold Ball' – Is a close relative to Alyssum, and provides a nice compact plant which will burst into yellow flowers in May and June. Height: 20cm (8"), Spread: 30cm (12").
  • Sedum selskianum 'Spirit' – A fantastic drought resistant stonecrop that produces starry yellow flowers above glossy foliage from June to September. Height: 10cm (4"). Spread: 25cm (10").

Iberis sempervirens (Large Plant)

Masses of scented white flowers are the head turning feature of this RHS AGM Candytuft variety, Iberis Sempervirens. It's an evergreen hardy perennial that will feel at home in poor soils in rockeries, on the tops of walls or the front of borders and is a reliable ground cover plant. Candytuft is attractive to pollinating insects too. Height 30cm (12"). Spread 50cm (20").

Euphorbia 'Ascot Rainbow'

Hosta 'White Feather'

Plantain Lily

A very unusual variety! Emerging leaves appear almost totally white, slowly developing green streaks until the whole leaf turns green. Spikes of lavender flowers tower over the lush foliage from mid summer. Unlike other varieties, White Feather tolerates a sunny position making an attractive border or container plant. Also excellent as ground cover in woodland gardens or on the outskirts of ponds and boggy areas. Height and spread: 45cm (18"). Supplied as size one bareroot plants.

Culinary information: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis

Christmas Box, Sweet box

The white spidery flowers have a fragrance so heady that it will stop you in your tracks. The sweet, honey scented winter blooms are followed by glossy black berries. This exceptional dwarf evergreen shrub is so versatile it will grow in almost any soil or situation - even those impossible dry shaded spots! A wonderful compact plant for woodland ground cover, or low informal hedges. You can even cut a few stems for a vase indoors! Grows to 60cm (24"). Supplied in 9cm pot.
