Grape 'Cabernet Sauvignon' produces good crops of small, red grapes with a rich, juicy blackcurrant flavour. This popular, self fertile wine grape has been raised in a container, trained onto a sturdy bamboo trellis, to restrict its root growth and keep it to a manageable size - ideal for growing your own grapes in even the smallest of spaces! Except in very mild areas 'Cabernet Sauvignon' grapes may not have sufficient time to ripen before winter commences, so containers are best moved to a greenhouse or conservatory to finish ripening. Height and spread: 1m (39"). (Untrained plants may reach up to 8m). Supplied in a 3 litre pot.

Grapes can be grown in relatively small spaces by restricting their root development, which consequently restricts the growth of the grape vine. This is best achieved by growing grapes in patio containers in a sunny, south facing position. Use a good quality, soil based compost such as John Innes No.3 and provide the grape vine with a sturdy support for its twining stems. Grape vines should be repotted from time to time into a slightly larger container. Once the grape reaches the desired size, occasional root pruning will help to restrict further growth.
Feed and water grapevines regularly throughout the growing season but take care not to overwater, as excessive watering may reduce the quality of the fruit. Train the stems onto trellis throughout summer to achieve the desired size and shape. Prune grapevines in winter to maintain a compact plant. Harvest grapes by cutting ripe bunches from the plant from October onwards. If fruits have not fully ripe, move the container to a protected position in a greenhouse or conservatory until the fruits are ripe.
