Japanese Maples are prized for their colourful, finely cut foliage and elegant branching habit. This superb duo of two popular varieties is the perfect way to bring colour and structure to your garden. Indispensable for bringing character to Japanese planting schemes and rockeries, but also make a fine container tree and add a lovely splash of colour to mixed borders. The delicate foliage of these Acers are susceptible to sun scorch and wind burn, so they are best planted in a sheltered, lightly shaded position. Height and spread: 4m (13").

Acer Bold Duo comprises:

Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' (7cm potted plant)- Grown for its tiny purple spring flowers and colourful red purple foliage that turns fiery crimson in autumn.
Acer 'Orange Dream' (9cm potted plant) - Pink-orange foliage in spring transforms to lime green throughout the summer. By autumn, the leaves have coloured once more to mellow shades of orange and gold.

Pot up acer plants and grow them on in cool frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside in their final positions. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them in borders outdoors. Grow acer trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively grow acers in large containers using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
