A brilliant way to brighten up your borders in spring, low maintenance Camellia japonica 'Doctor King' bursts into bloom with masses of crimson flowers, each centred with a bright yellow eye for that extra pop of colour. This gorgeous Camellia variety comes alive in spring and puts on a fabulous show that you can look forward to year after year with very little fuss. Even when not in bloom, the sturdy structure and dense covering of glossy green leaves make an impact either as part of a mixed planting scheme, shrubbery or as a standalone specimen. Thriving in sun or partial shade, it’s a great choice for a front garden where is will act as a useful year-round screen too. Height: 3m (10’). Spread: 2.5m (8’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

1 x 9cm Potted Plant (KB3629)

Camellia plants require a moist, well drained, acid soil in a sheltered, shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow Camellia plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3 and position in dappled shade.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Camellias occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.

Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
