Strawberry Tree

For year round interest, this superb Strawberry Tree is hard to beat. Arbutus unedo 'Compacta' forms a neat evergreen shrub or small tree that can be easily grown in a sheltered border or container. The small, lantern-shaped autumn flowers are followed by rounded scarlet red fruits that take a full year to ripen - so fruits and flowers can often be seen on the plant at the same time! Although edible, the fruits of the Strawberry Tree have a sharp aftertaste, so they best made into jams and preserves for a sweeter Guava-like flavour. Height and spread: 150cm (59"). Supplied in 9cm pot.

Acacia dealbata

Evergreen fern-like foliage makes an attractive foil for clusters of bright yellow, fluffy ball shaped mimosa flowers. Acer 'Orange Beauty'

(Japanese Maple)

The fiery foliage of Acer 'Orange Beauty' creates a riotous explosion of orange-yellow leaves in spring that colour to shades of red and gold in autumn. Persian Ironwood

Parrotia persica

Native to Northern Iran, this superb tree is grown for its late-winter flowers and glorious autumn foliage. Closely related to the Witch Hazel (Hamamelis), Persian Ironwood starts flowering in late winter, producing clusters of small spider-like, crimson flowers. These are followed by glossy, rich green leaves, which in the autumn transform to stunning, vibrant shades of yellow, orange, red and purple. On mature trees, the peeling bark creates a mottled effect most appreciated in winter once the leaves have fallen. As the common name suggests, Parrotia persica is a tough, low-maintenance plant, growing well in almost any soil. Having an unusual spreading habit this tree as best grown as a specimen tree or as part of a woodland garden, with plenty of space to grow. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 10m (33'). Paulownia tomentosa

(Paulownia imperialis, Empress Tree, Foxglove tree)

Native to China, this unusual deciduous tree is sure to be a talking point in your garden! Beautiful fragrant, lilac-mauve flowers, which resemble foxgloves, are borne in late spring just before the tree bursts into leaf. The large bright green, slightly hairy leaves are produced on stout upright stems making the foxglove tree a fantastic architectural feature in the garden. This fast-growing tree can be cut back hard annually to produce a tall shrub adorned with lush, tropical-looking leaves to 30cm in diameter! Sharon Fruit

Diospyros (Persimmon)

The Persimmon tree produces orange coloured Sharon fruit in late autumn which are best harvested after the first frosts have softened the very sweet, tomato sized fruit. Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'

(Japanese Maple )

Grown for its tiny purple spring flowers and colourful red purple foliage that turns fiery crimson in autumn. This beautiful Acer makes a superb specimen tree with a slow growing, compact rounded habit that makes it well suited to growing in small gardens and containers. This variety also makes a very attractive bonsai tree. Supplied as a 3 year old root-wrapped plant, 45cm (18") tall. Height: 3m (10') in 10 years.

Acer palmatum 'Little Princess'

(Acer palmatum 'Chiyo-hime')

This superb Japanese Maple is cloaked in lovely red tinged summer foliage, turning to vibrant yellows and oranges by autumn. The best leaf colours are produced in a partially shaded position which is sheltered from drying winds. With its slow growing, compact habit, Acer palmatum 'Little Princess makes a fantastic dwarf specimen tree for a patio container, reaching only 150cm at maturity. Height and spread: 150cm (59").
