Persian IronwoodParrotia persica Native to Northern Iran, this superb tree is grown for its late-winter flowers and glorious autumn foliage. Closely related to the Witch Hazel (Hamamelis), Persian Ironwood starts flowering in late winter, producing clusters of small spider-like, crimson flowers. These are followed by glossy, rich green leaves, which in the autumn transform to stunning, vibrant shades of yellow, orange, red and purple. On mature trees, the peeling bark creates a mottled effect most appreciated in winter once the leaves have fallen. As the common name suggests, Parrotia persica is a tough, low-maintenance plant, growing well in almost any soil.
