With large, fragrant, pure white flowers on bare branches, Magnolia x soulangeana ‘Alba Superba’ is a magnificent spectacle in spring. It is often grown in front gardens where, for a few weeks is a delight to all the neighbours, but it is also striking in a woodland, set against a leafy background of other trees and shrubs. Goblet shaped buds flushed with purple-red emerge at the same time as the young leaves. This Magnolia has a shapely upright form. Height: 7m (22’). Spread: 5m (15’).

Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a moist, well drained acid to neutral soil that is high in organic matter. If you don’t have acid soil, incorporate plenty of ericaceous compost into your border prior to planting. Plant bareroot Magnolias at the same depth as they were previously planted. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Magnolia plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems.
