Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

The perfect shrub for small gardens, with three charming features in one! Abelia ‘Tricolour Charm’ forms a nicely compact shrub, ideal for smaller borders, the front of larger ones, or as a container specimen. Its glossy, elegantly- pointed foliage is beautifully variegated in green, cream and pink, standing out against crimson red stems. From July until the first frosts, a second performance follows, when ‘Tricolour Charm’ is smothered in pink-tinged, trumpet-shaped, white flowers with a light fragrance.

In small spaces, plants really need to earn their keep and although it may seem counter-intuitive, it’s essential to prioritise evergreens first, followed by foliage colour and then last of all flowers. Plants that offer all three of these qualities in one compact package are rare. In a sunny, sheltered spot, Abelia ‘Tricolour Charm’ does just that - retaining its tri-coloured, semi-evergreen foliage and providing interest throughout the year, then flowering for weeks from summer to autumn and even throwing in fragrance as well! Three very good reasons to be enchanted by Abelia 'Tricolour Charm'! Height and spread: 1m (39in).

Plant Abelia x grandiflora in garden borders in any fertile, well drained garden soil, in full sun. Alternatively grow Abelia plants in patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Feed and water container-grown plants regularly. Deadhead faded Abelia flowers to prolong the flowering season. In exposed areas or those where winters are severe, apply a deep bark mulch around the base of Glossy Abelia plants in autumn to protect the roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound mulch up against the main stem. Alternatively protect with horticultural fleece. In late spring, trim Abelia x grandiflora lightly and remove any shoots which spoil the symmetry of the plant.
