Abies koreana 'Kohouts Icebreaker' is an outstanding dwarf conifer that provides all year round texture, structure and foliage colour in rock gardens and containers. Forming a low-growing shrub with short, stubby branches, it bears distinctive, tightly curled needles which reveal white undersides, creating a shimmering, blue-silver foliage effect. Specimens slowly grow into small, flat-topped cushions. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height and spread after 10 years: 30cm (1ft).

Grow Abies in reliably moist, fertile, neutral to slightly acid, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun. A sheltered site with even light is preferable to ensure even growth and retain its elegant shape. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.

In the first few years after planting, water Fir trees regularly, particularly during dry periods until they are fully established. No pruning is required.
