Renowned for its coloured foliage and attractive rounded habit, this Japanese Maple is one of the best, providing plenty of interest throughout the season. Deeply divided spring leaves develop from orange-yellow to a brilliant shade of green in summer. By autumn, the foliage transforms again to a cloak of fabulous bright orange. Acer palmatum 'Katsura' is perfect for a sheltered spot in dappled shade where it makes a superb specimen for borders or large containers. Height and spread: Up to 4m (13'). Supplied in a 9cm pot.

Pot up acer plants and grow them on in cool frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside in their final positions. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them in borders outdoors. Grow acer in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dapple shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively grow acers in large containers using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
