Japanese maples are the perfect option for adding dramatic autumn leaf colour to the garden, as well as year round shape and structure. Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’ is by far one of the best, grown as a large deciduous shrub or small tree; it looks fabulous all year round. Height: 8m (26’). Spread: 4m (13’).

Grow acer in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dapple shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively grow acers in large containers using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
