Ajuga reptans is a wonderful spreader, valued for its pretty foliage as much as its flowers. The glossy, oval leaves are a lovely blackish burgundy colour and form neat rosettes which rapidly spread through creeping stolons. From mid to late spring, it bears short, upright spikes of deep blue flowers. Thrives in shady, difficult ground beneath trees and shrubs or in crevices between bricks and flagstones. Provides an important early source of nectar for foraging insects. Height: 15cm (6in). Spread: 15-145cm (0.5-4.5ft).

Grow Bugle plants into any moist, well-drained soil. Plants will perform best in partial shade, as full sun can cause leaf scorch. Ajuga will even tolerate poor soils in full shade. Makes excellent ground cover for shady corners.

Ajuga plants are virtually maintenance-free, and do not required any pruning. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps every three years to maintain their vigour.
