Alnus glutinosa

A water-loving tree frequently seen growing on the banks of rivers and streams, Common Alder is a UK native that is suited to moist sites, including waterlogged soils. This tough tree is perfect for areas prone to flooding.

Alder is a conical tree covered with distinctive, dark green rounded leaves that don’t come to a point. It is perfect for fast-growing hedging and screening with foliage that remains on the tree late in the season. From February to April, it carries masses of tiny, cone-like fruits that are yellow when young, ageing to purple. Through winter the purple catkins and twigs give the whole tree a distinctive purple appearance. Alder is a great tree for wildlife, birds are attracted to the catkins and the tree supports a host of insects. Mature height: 20m (65ft). Spread: 6m (20ft).
