For sheer flower power, there’s little to rival Alstroemerias – their ability to pump out blooms from early summer to the first frosts without ever exhausting themselves is nothing less than extraordinary. For this reason, they make rewarding patio plants and unlike once-only bedding, Alstroemerias are perennial so you won’t be throwing them onto the compost heap at the end of the season. Although 'Inticancha Moon' will require some frost protection, this is easily achieved – just move the container into a sheltered spot or greenhouse to overwinter and it will eagerly burst into bloom the following year! Height and spread: 30-40cm (12-16in).

Alstroemerias perform best in a sunny, sheltered spot in a rich, free-draining soil that contains lots of organic matter. A weekly feed with a high-potassium feed such as tomato food will encourage prolific blooming, while removing each stem after the flowers have faded will prolong the flowering season. Tall stems may benefit from staking or support to prevent wind damage. Will survive temperatures down to around minus 5c but not much lower. Apply an autumn mulch if in a border, or if in a container, move to a frost-free spot over winter.Throughout the growing season, water Peruvian lilies regularly and feed container grown plants each month. When picking alstroemeria pluck the flowers rather than cutting as plucking stimulates the rhizome encourage further growth. In autumn, cut back the old Alstroemeria flower stems and apply a dry mulch of chipped bark or straw to the base of the plant to protect it from cold winter weather. Alstroemeria prefers to be left undisturbed but can be divided in autumn or spring if clumps become overcrowded.
