Caution: Harmful if eaten. Soak the roots of Amaryllis bulbs in tepid water for a few hours before planting. Grow Amaryllis in containers of loam based compost such as John Innes No.2. Plant bulbs so that their neck and shoulders protrude above the soil surface. Hippeastrum bulbs require a minimum temperature of 13°C (55°F) and are best grown as a house plant, or in a heated greenhouse or conservatory.
Water Amaryllis bulbs moderately while they are in active growth, and feed them every 2 weeks with diluted liquid fertiliser. Deadhead faded Amaryllis flowers and cut away the old stems from their base, leaving the foliage intact. Continue to feed and water amaryllis bulbs until the leaves begin to yellow and die back. As the foliage dies, reduce watering and allow the soil to dry out in order to provide the bulbs with a dry, dormant period. Dormant Amaryllis plants should be kept in a cool, frost free, dry position until active growth begins again. Hippeastrum bulbs dislike root disturbance and prefer to be slightly pot-bound. Repot them every few years, and only when it is absolutely necessary.
