Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

A special dwarf selection of Strawberry Tree, Arbutus unedo ‘Atlantic’ makes an excellent compact tree for small spaces, urban gardens, courtyards and even planters. Free-flowering and free-fruiting from an early age, with glossy, evergreen foliage and beautiful cinnamon-coloured bark on maturity, it provides interest throughout the year. It is ideal for coastal and urban gardens, associating perfectly with Mediterranean plantings and providing a banquet of late food for pollinating insects in wildlife-friendly gardens. Arbutus unedo ‘Atlantic’ forms a bushy, domed-shaped tree. In early autumn, it is covered in clusters of pretty, bell-shaped, creamy white to pink flowers against a dark backdrop of leathery leaves. The flowers are followed by striking strawberry-like fruits which develop from the previous year’s flowers. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height:3 - 4 m (10 - 13 ft). Spread: 2.5 - 3 m (8 - 10 ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow Strawberry Trees in any non alkaline, fertile, moist but free draining soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting. Choose a position in full sun with shelter from cold winds. Although perfectly hardy once mature, Arbutus plants will appreciate a layer of fleece for winter protection when young.
Feed and water Strawberry Trees regularly until fully established. Once established, Arbutus trees require little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in winter or spring.
